[Interview] UEE’s double life

Honey Thighs.’ The term was coined in 2009, whenAfterschool’s UEE (23) became a hot Hallyu star.
The girl known for her thighs was suddenly the new Korean sensation, making appearances in popular entertainment programs and receiving advertising opportunities reserved for only the most elite of Korean female celebrities.
Furthermore, she was also offered a role on (then) the #1 Kdrama, ‘Queen Seon Deok‘. No one could deny that UEE was the new ‘it’ girl. Every male in Korea wanted to date her, and every girl wanted to be her. Her sudden rise to fame undeniably caused some controversy but she carried on, showing the nation her uniquely distinct UEE appeal. To be frank, maybe not everyone knew UEE of After School, but there were few that didn’t know ‘Honey Thighs UEE’.
Her fame seemed to know no end, as she was offered another main role in a new drama, ‘Birdie Buddy‘. UEE received criticism for taking on too many roles and was rumored to be careless in her responsibilities as an After School member, but didn’t let that faze her. She wanted to make herself known in the acting world. But all of it must’ve been too good to be true, as the broadcast date for ‘Birdie Buddy’ kept being pushed back, and no one knew realistically, if and when it would actually air.
All of her hard work seemed to be thrown out the window, but another opportunity came knocking for UEE. ‘Birdie Buddy’, which seemed to have no future even after over a year of shooting the drama, was finally scheduled to air on tvN, and not only that, UEE was also cast in the new KBS-2TV weekend drama, ‘Ojakyo Brothers‘.
I’m really ecstatic. I am kind of nervous that both dramas are being broadcast at the same time, but I’m glad I’m able to share two distinctly different characters in the two dramas with all of our viewers. I wish we could’ve aired ‘Birdie Buddy’ a little sooner, but better late than never! I’m thrilled that I’m getting to do everything I want to do, and every day is a joyful blessing.”
The nay sayers were concerned about both projects being broadcast at the same time, but UEE who is an optimist and sees the positive in all situations, believed that this was a golden opportunity for herself.
She plays a sassy and confident character in ‘Ojakyo Brothers’, and then a more sincere, innocent character in ‘Birdie Buddy’. She stated she wanted to showcase a new side of her for all of her fans. It is true that she is still inexperienced when it comes to acting and therefore a bit awkward, but instead of allowing her shortcomings to make her shy away from acting, she is proactive and determined in learning more to become a better actress.
It’s so strange when I see myself acting on screen. But in ‘Birdie Buddy’, the director asked me to be myself in the drama, rather than playing a role he had in mind, so it made it a little easier on me. I was probably a little too natural! (laughs). I played the role of a female athlete, and it reminded me of my high school days when I used to swim. And in ‘Ojakyo Brothers’, I played a role completely different from my own personality, so that was fun. I think through these dramas, I’ve learned to become more honest with myself and others.”
UEE is slowly earning her creds as an actress, and she is enjoying learning what acting is all about. Rather than considering it ‘work’, she is merely doing something she truly enjoys and giving it her 100%.
I’m thankful for all the new attention. Instead of letting it stress me out, I remind myself that this is the beginning of something new, and I want to work to develop myself as an actress.”
It won’t be easy for UEE, since she made her debut in the entertainment world as an idol star first, and is still at the bottom of the acting world. However, UEE will work hard and continue to be optimistic, just like she has done up until now. We hope that she never loses her smile, or her fighting spirit.

[Review] “Doo Be Doo Ba” by Bebe Mignon

Back in December of last year, YWHO Enterprise (led by Vibe’s Yoon Min Soo) released a winter special album that garnered much attention in the K-Pop scene for its no-frills music. Following on its heels, they’ve now released several parts of their summer special album, ‘The YWHO Voice‘.
Comprised of 4menBebe Mignon, and Mi, YWHO Enterprise is gaining a reputation for their talented vocalists. While 4men are superstars in their own right in the vocalist area, their colleagues are regrettably not as prominent in the limelight.
Hence, the project kicked off with Bebe Mignon, who was the first in line to release their summer single, “Doo Be Doo Ba“. “Doo Be Doo Ba” is a remake of “Doo Be Doo” from South African pop band,Freshly Ground.
====
Bebe Mignon is a sweet little girl group. I first caught wind of Bebe Mignon prior to their debut late last year, as I was intrigued by their connection with 4MEN. The group is comprised of three members: Hae GeumGa Eul, and most notably, Ben, the lead vocalist. Bebe Mignon’s main niche, much like that of 4MEN, is in the world of ballads and OSTs (“One Woman” – Secret Garden). Since they possess vocal talent much stronger than that of the typical K-Pop girl group, they’re pretty much stuck with ballads by default.
However, I’ve always maintained that not every powerful singer should resort to singing ballads just because they can. There are great artists out there who I prefer on faster-paced songs over slower ones (TVXQ, SHINee). After thinking about it, I realized that Bebe Mignon could potentially nail a killer uptempo if they tried. While I was on that train of thought, “Doo Be Doo Ba” entered the scene.
This cover captures the essence of the original song. It’s easy-going, chipper, and fun to listen to (not to mention that Ben’s voice is a near perfect match to Freshly Ground’s lead vocalist, Zolani Mahola, which freaks me out a little bit).
The style of “Doo Be Doo Ba” is very K-indie friendly, which is an appropriate fit for Bebe Mignon. They manage to express a warm feeling, but with a cute charm. Bebe Mignon’s vocals are light and soft, and some of that gets lost when they sing on very moody ballads. Here, they treat us to a refreshing display of their singing, and I really like this on them as a girl group. It’s not pervasive, nor is it overdone. Simply put — it’s a beautiful song sung beautifully.

Rain shares a boyish photo after his Daegu concer

Singer Rain has revealed a photo after he finished up his concert in Daegu.
On August 28th, at midnight, the singer tweeted “Thank you to everyone who came to my concert today. I have other work I have to tend to so I’m taking the KTX. Please look forward to my next concert in Jeju“.
In the photo, Rain is seen wearing a denim jacket, a bookbag, and headphones. His sleek chin and sharp nose especially were complimented by his fans.
Netizens who viewed the photo left comments like, “He’s so cool. Even a hat can’t hide his superior looks” and “You have such a rough schedule because of your nationwide tour. Please always have strength“.
Meanwhile, Rain is awaiting the release of his movie “Soar: Close to The Sun” starring Shin Se KyungYoon Joon Sang, and Lee Jong Suk.

[Review] “Blind” by Junggigo

Junggigo may be a new name to many of you, but he’s been thriving (and vibing) in the Korean underground scene since 2008. By collaborating with numerous hip hop artists like Paloalto and The Quiett, Junggigo’s voice has found its way onto some of the best Korean hip-hop albums that’ve been released over the years.
Interestingly, mainstream hip-hop tends to be overtly loud, but Korea’s underground flavor lends itself to far more subtle arrangements, and Junggigo’s soft vocal delivery plays perfectly to that inclination (Listen: “byebyebye“). It’s easy to see why artists keep wanting to draw him into their tracks.
His latest digital single, “Blind” (produced and written by SoulFish of Pinodyne), is no different. Smooth, soothing, and definitely lounge-worthy, it’s a track that calms the soul and leaves the listener in a dream-like state.
Junggigo’s voice isn’t necessarily mind-blowing in the sense that it could reach those high crazy notes, but regardless of that, I’m sure he’s well aware of his comfort zone. He doesn’t blow your eardrums out, and considering the audible environment he seems to work with, I don’t think he really has to.

2NE1’s Dara and Bom pretend to be tragic heroines

2NE1’s Sandara Park has once again proven that she can display a variety of looks for the camera.
Posted on her me2day on August 24th, Sandara attached this photo along with an announcement that named the winner of a contest the girls had set up.
Amusingly, Sandara and Park Bom posed as tragic heroines who looked like they wanted to escape from their glass castles. Sandara stretches out her hand towards the window, while gazing outside with a sorrowful expression. Meanwhile, Park Bom seems to be the supportive friend, who can only look at Sandara with pitiful eyes.
Netizens commented, “This is a very sorrowful conceptual photo”, “The acting in their faces seems so alive”, “How can they express such sorrowful eyes so well”, and “I wonder what kind of concept this is”.
In related news, 2NE1 will be holding their first ever solo concert, ‘NOLZA’, starting from the 26th to the 28th at Seoul’s Olympic Hall.
